PostSubject: Timeline Map   Sun Jul 06, 2008 8:27 pm

I just bought an OS Timeline Historical Map. It uses digital composites of the original OS maps from 1817 - 1830 and they are re-scaled to match closely to the modern OS map 173 - Swindon and Devizes. I already had some reprinted OS maps, including Sheet 77 Devizes - but this new one looks very different - darker, but low contrast. It's very interesting though. This part of Wiltshire has sarsen drifts everywhere - labelled 'large stones'.
It costs £6.50 and is highly recommended.

I've put up some scans to give you a peek. All at 200 dpi. I've also used the Photoshop 'sharpen' filter which is a big improvement on the original.

I think this area is very interesting - Temple Bottom. There's a Cromlech marked on the map. Does anyone know more about it?

These two pics were taken from a bigger scan that you can search around in:

Steve,
there are 3 cromlechs on that map.
One near Devils Den.
One above the word downs and another at Temple bottom.
There is a paper about them in WAM.

I saw the cromlech by Devil's Den - where's the other one?

Is the WAM article online anywhere?

The link to the bigger map works now.

I've searched around for more info on these 3 cromlechs (I found the 3rd one on the map) but I can't find anything.

How do you get the WAM articles?

I searched the TMA site but there's nothing there. Well there is - there's a lot of pics of the Devil's Den and a crappy poem by someone calling himself 'Mindweed'...

You can search though articles by looking at the index box (if it hasn't been dropped again) in Devizes museum.
Look up the word Cromlech.
Calne library has a complete set of WAMs that can be taken out.
There isn't a lot of info about them.
They have names like, The Runied Cromlech and The Destroyed Cromlech and are really just rough groups of stones in a pile.

You won't find much on tma, its had loads of people leave and take their photos with them.
A lot of rock art has disappeared and loads of Irish stuff taken off.
If your not part of the tma clique you are hounded off the forums.
Same with tmp, once the loonies move in people leave in droves.
