| I have just found amongst my files an 1882 map showing the positions of the buried stones located by A.C.Smith during his 1881 survey of henge using probing rods. Given the interesting information it contains I can't believe I have overlooked it this long especially when bemoaning the lack of info regarding this topic that NT has issued.

| After following links on university web-sites to the reports. The other way to keep it secret seems to be to write in such a way that the reader is completely bored after two sentences. Or it makes no sense what-so-ever.
I know I am quite capable of wading through these reports but I seem to always find something more rewarding to spend my time on. |

| Martin Papworth 'Report on the Geophysical Survey of parts of the Southeast and Northeast Quadrants of Avebury Henge: October - December 2003' - 39 pages published by the National Trust February 2004.
If you want a copy ring them and ask them for it.

| | A curiosity that is apparent on the plan is the stone that Smith labels as number 1 in the SW quadrant doesn't appear to be one that Keiller found later (unless it was 16, but that doesn't look near enough to the western entrance to be the Smith stone)....If he did survey the SW quadrant with any thoroughness it also seems odd that he didn't find all of the Keiller stones. |
