Interesting..

..............The offence is committed of a person uses another to look after, hide or transport a dangerous weapon for him and he does so under arrangements or circumstances that facilitate, or are intended to facilitate, the weapon's being available to him for an unlawful purpose.

The prosecution do not have to prove that the defendant had the weapon with him for the purpose of inflicting injury: if the jury are sure that the weapon is offensive per se, the defendant will only be acquitted if he establishes lawful authority or reasonable excuse.

Sounds awfully sexist, old boy!

Is that why Swindon's infamous `Ermine Street Guard' , the Roman's ware skirts? geek

Your not wrong...But..

I just copied and pasted sections from the offensive weopons order..

You have to wonder if that German got home though. I do believe carrying offence weopons though customs carries a further penalty...

Just wanted to say thank you Chance for the "thousand apologies" though none were necessary, I was just mulling stuff over.

The sword does hold a lot of symbolism. As you said, it can be an object of highly crafted beauty or, alternatively, an instrument of mutilation - depending on who is holding it and what is in their heart. Compared to the many other sophisticated weapons of death and destruction that exist today there is something simple, honest and honourable about a sword.

An interesting discussion. I think Tony's point is that perhaps your friend from northern Europe was taking an unnecessary risk with his own freedom by carrying these weapons, albeit they may have been impressive to see - it's easy to forget out at Avebury but we live in troubled times.

If a man should conquer in battle a thousand and a then thousand more,
and another man should conquer himself, his would be the greater victory,
because the greatest of all victories is the victory over oneself;
and neither the gods in heaven above nor the demons down below
can turn into defeat the victory of such a man.

Watchfulness is the path of immortality:
unwatchfulness is the path of death.
Those who are watchful never die:
those who do not watch are already as dead.

Those who with a clear mind have seen this truth,
those who are wise and ever-watchful,
they feel the joy of watchfulness, the joy of the path of the Great.

Exactement.

The Police do not take kindly to edged weopons. Nor do Customs and excise.

Just to say thanks for all the updates Pete. It will be so good to see Silbury restored to its former self (externally at least). Once again, I should just say how informative and often entertaining this forum is, for anyone with an interest in this fascinating bit of Wiltshire.

Keep it going!

It's a shame there are so many nonposting lurkers.
It seems people just want to grab the latest news and scarper off to other forums to post the news as their own.
I think I'll just lurk for a while...

They are now dismantling the scaffolding.
Chalk is still being taken to the top on the monorail to finish the capping.
It looks like the whole dig took a year as it started on May 1st last year.

Lesser spotted sea eagle - spotted

Went out to Easton Down Long Barrow this afternoon and came across your sea eagle.

Thought it was a magpie at first, then it looked like a buzzard.
Only realised it was your sea eagle when it toke off and I could see the wing tips.

It seemed reluctant to travel very far.

Has it been damaged?

it could be Chance, I haven't seen it around Silbury for ages.
I haven't seen the Silverback Hare at Harestone down circle for a while either.
Lots of normal hares around at the moment, and a few monkjacks along the Wansdyke.

I used to organise litter picks around Silbury regularly but then Emma started the Avebury Guardians and they took over.
Whatever happened to them?
They launched in a blaze of glory and the National Trust gave themselves an award.
Not heard anything from them since...

it took 2 years for the white patch on top to cover over with grass.
Old photos show a large slippage scar which took many many years to heal.

It's late in the year for turfing...Unless they intend to keep it watered.

It would best be laid in the autumn. Then it will then 'take' over the winter period... But, my guess is, that they will turf when the repairs are finished. They (The turfs) will dry, shrink and die during the summer (Unless it's nice and wet). NT will then over seed next autumn (That's if they bother)...

A possible two to three years before it looks right..

Pete...You have another old photo with three or more 'slippages' on it. I reckon that Hill was a hell of a lot higher and a lot slimmer when completed those many moons ago..

well knowing EH they will take a year of various meetings to decide which types of grass seeds to use (its an SSI so they Must be the correct seeds) before making the wrong decision and making it worst (again)

The scars on the old photos are from various excavations, not all of them recorded.

Are you coming to the Silbury talk in Devizes on May 9th?

Well your probably right about that...

That last time I saw you in Avebury they had repaired the worn areas with a slow growing agrostis and fescue mix. Totally different from the prevailing grass species present...

The meeting... well, who knows... I will give it consideration though..

It could be interesting..

I was out there today Pete, I took some photos from Waden Hill. It all looked peaceful. I bumped into the bloke I saw last time I was out there who was doing a guided tour for a small group. This time I said hello, he gave me his leaflet, apparently he is a writer called Peter Knight who has a web-site address: www.stoneseeker.net - looks quite interesting.

Yes. That has been there for years and is getting worst.
I asked EH if they were going to fix it and they said it wasn't on the brief.
I don't get it ! scratch

Why not fix EVERYTHING while they are at it?
I talked with the Skanska men today.
They are going home next thursday.
I'm going to buy them a large bottle of Malt Whiskey for doing such a good job under so much pressure.

another thing is the hill is riddled with rabbit holes.
3 years ago I photographed a group of workmen putting in rabbit traps all around the hill.
I asked what they were doing and they shuffled around then said "putting in drainage trenches"
I walked off muttering "Drainage my Ar*e!"
I will check the traps when everyone has left site....

Years ago the Greenaway family would have got someone with a ferret to clear the hill. Not allowed now....

I found some flint blades right near Silbury at the weekend, i'll get some pics done. I know i should get round to reporting all these bits, but through
experience i've found that some SFLO dont seem that
bothered.

I look on it that at least its safe? or wont end up
on ebay.....

Good to see Silbury getting back to something like normal Pete, it'll be nice to go there and have some peace from all those foreign objects!

Pete, your picture looks peaceful and as I saw the same view on the same day I know that it was very peaceful out there. The activity at the base of Silbury looked like just tidying up.

I also just want to say how much I appreciate all the monitoring and information sharing you have done over the past year. It has been traumatic much of the time, especially with the flooding of last year. People have fallen out big time but here we are, Silbury still stands and is looking at peace (for the want of a better expression). I know that I know very little of the internal politics at English Heritage but there must have been some 'good guys' there too, to get the job done.

Thank you Pete for the above and thank you to the workers for giving us back Silbury.

I would have liked to have shown more but the armchair critics couldn't help themselves and bashed EH at every opportunity.
EH could have done a lot better giving info out to the public.
They said they were going have a live webcam but it never happened.
There were cameras all over the site which were only visible to the project manager.
The amount of Spin EH put on everything was amazing, I'm suprised the old hill isn't spinning like a top.

The Stonehenge dig had a video everyday but at Silbury we had 3 films which were constantly being edited (I managed to save every version they published.)

Hopefully the hill will be left to recover now and it won't be explored again in our lifetime, although I doubt it will be left alone in the future as they have the excuse of going back in to remove the iron supports Atkinson put in during the 1960's dig.

Can't see that grass and wild flower seed taking though... Very unusual, seeding a bank as steep as that...

If we get heavy rain, the majority of it will be washed to the bottom of the hill. If we get light rain, it will germinate and die as the hill dries out (unless we get a constant. damp summer)..

My guess is that it will have to heal itself.. And that could take some time... Unless it stays damp..

Yep...

I have been thinking of Her a lot just of late.. It's the Bluebells, don't you know...

Every year the same.

Her lost still hurts... The Internet is a strange, wonderful and sometimes sad place. If somebody had told me I about the effect the lost of a Woman I had never met would have on me.. Those many years ago. I would not have believed them. Sad

I will get down at sometime through Pete. I would like to see that Sarsen Drift. My Mum wants me to stay for a few days this summer. If I do. I will let you know... In the meantime I will take pictures of Boats and Stuff..
We are going to Normandy in August and I have hunted down a couple of neolithic site to go see..
