| Hi ad
You made an excellent job of that stone numbering diagram.
Putting too much info on it might confuse it, but how about......
a) The geophiz or some indication of buried stones b) The date a stone was removed or destroyed c) The name of a stone and any folklore/tales d) Any astro any alignments e) Could you transfer any measurements or angles from other drawings?
Some of the Avebury pagan's have named some....
No. 20 - The Dalek - The bits that came out of the old blacksmiths cottage. No. 50 - Shergar or The Nags Head - The lost horses head of the north. No. 68 - The Michael Stone - Said to be where the Lay-line passes through the circle No. 73 - The Sunrise Stone - Said to be the Eastern portal stone. Also know as the Foxhole No. 78 - The Beltane Stone - Said to be where the sun would rise at Beltane.
The keeper of the stones has told me some of the stone names, one stone, No. 206 I think, was for women who had lost children in childbirth. All the stones in a line, in front of the obelisk, are said to be planets.
Would be nice to know which stones have never been moved and which have gone from the 1663 plan of John Aubrey.
Will try to find out some more next time I visit to stones.

| | There's some interesting bits there from Chance & Pete.....I would like to be able to add the positions of the recently located buried stones but any attempt I've made to obtain the info from NT seems to get stonewalled....perhaps someone else has had better luck!.....By comparing Aubrey's map with Stukeley's plan of the henge the positions of some can be guessed at , notably the group in the SE quadrant marked as destroyed by Tom Robinson in 1700.....If I do put any info on the map it would be nice to know that it is accurate.....Some of the pagan names are interesting.....I can easily duplicate the map if information overload looks like happening on the original version....I'll try and get bits done as and when. |

| | Thanks for such a useful map. I was wondering if it would be possible to overlay the current village and roads over it? |

| | As Rose requested I have now overlaid the village and roads on it. Although I can't guarantee 100% accuracy it immediately becomes apparent just how much the modern roads have moved relative to the estimated positions of the original entrances. |

| Cheers Pete - the map's a really great resource.
And thanks for starting up this forum - it's fantastic to be able to draw on so much accumulated knowledge. |

| | Thank you so much for overlaying the current roads and village on your map - its fantastic! I find it quite hard to visualise where all the stones would have been and now I'll be able to get my bearings as it were. I'm quite excited about going for a walk around Avebury tomorrow with new eyes! Thank you again for such a great map. |

| | I've now added the info showing possible buried stones from the 1882 plan of the A.C.Smith survey of 1881....There is a degree of guesswork as the 1882 plan is somewhat "loose" but I think the positions must be reasonably correct....The width of the forum has also been increased slightly which should allow for a larger default picky size before viewing becomes affected. |

| Excellent...
Just needs a 'time frame' overlay of the first settlement though to the modern day...
