| By Nigel Kerton (from the Gaz & Herald) Two vehicles collided at Beckhampton today Gaz on line
FIRE fighters were called to free a driver trapped after a two car crash at about 11am today near Beckhampton.
A Peugeot and a Toyota collided on the A4 on the Marlborough side of the roundabout completely blocking the road.
Traffic quickly built up on the A4361 Devizes road west of Beckhampton and police had to put a diversion in place at Bishops Cannings.
It was believed the trapped driver's injuries were not life threatening. |

| All was wet Steve, but the sky was clear coming back - the show went on in spite of the rain and I borrowed a pair of wellies. Most enjoyable.
Hope all goes well with your Mum, Tony. I don't know her obviously but still send my very best wishes for her speedy recovery.
Best June |

| Fight to cut speeds (from Gaz & Herald)
FAMILIES living near the busy Beckhampton roundabout who are calling for speed limits have evidence of motorbikes doing speeds of more than 140mph.
Yesterday there was a two-car crash on the Devizes side of the roundabout close to the entrance to the village.
Two people had to be cut out of a Peugeot that had been in a head-on collision with a Toyota.
The Toyota occupants walked away from the crash but the Peugeot driver and passenger were taken to hospital with injuries not believed to be life threatening.
There was no suggestion that speed played any part in yesterday's crash, which happened in very wet conditions, but villagers said it highlighted the perils they are campaigning about.
There have been numerous accidents, including a fatality involving a motorcyclist a few years ago, on the approaches to the roundabout.
At present neither the A4 nor A4361, which cross at the roundabout, have any speed controls other than the national speed limit.
That is laughable, said Robert Jebb, who moved into the village two years ago. He has used a hand held speed gun to record motorbikes going as fast as 144mph past his house.
Video shot by Mr Jebb shows motorbikes regularly accelerating to speeds of well over 100mph as they head west out of the roundabout on the A4 towards Calne. He has sent copies of his video to Wiltshire County Council and Devizes MP Michael Ancram in support of village demands for speed limits.
Yesterday Mr Jebb said: "We have had a very disappointing response this morning from George Batten (head of highways at the county council) who said the implementation of a speed limit would make no difference because they will all ignore it."
Mike Bedford, a father-of-four who has lived in Beckhampton for six years, said he had seen speeds increase year on year.
He said there was great danger for Beckhampton families trying to emerge onto the A4 opposite the Waggon and Horses or onto the A4361.
"When you try to pull out opposite the pub to turn right you have about three seconds to get out," he said, adding that families regularly had near misses.
One woman walking across the road with her daughter to catch a school bus had a motorbike actually pass between them.
"That's how dangerous it is," said Mr Bedford.
The village wants a speed limit on all four approaches to the roundabout and continuing north all the way to Avebury and east all the way to Marlborough. |

| Thank you for posting all that Pete, it is a very serious issue and I apologise if I made light of it in yesterday's post. When I did my Wansdyke walk last year we emerged from Beckhampton across A4 to the Waggon and Horses and I can verify how dangerous that point is - there was no way we could all get across together.
This goes back to previous discussions about enforced speed limits on that stretch of road, for local residents and all the walkers and visitors to the area. Most of the accidents involve vehicles but it is only a matter of time before a pedestrian is killed - perhaps you know details of this having happened already.
Today I was in Devizes for the afternoon - on the return journey between Avebury and Swindon the bus driver had to slam his brakes on throwing everyone forward because some idiot decided to cut across him into a turning.
PS: The accident you reported yesterday was also in the Swindon Advertizer today so perhaps we should start writing to all the the papers that cover Wiltshire to highlight some of the A4 speeding issues that have been discussed on this forum. |

| Traffic crash sees man hospitalised By Gazette Reporter 16th July
A MAN has been airlifted to hospital after a traffic smash near Avebury.
The incident happened around 11am and saw a Skoda involved in a head-on collision with a lorry on the A4361 near Avebury.
An elderly man was injured in the crash.
One casualty was later taken to Swindon's Great Western Hospital by air ambulance.
update.
TWO people were trapped in a car on the Swindon-Devizes road near Avebury this morning after a collision with a coal lorry.
The crash happened on the A4361 between Avebury and Winterbourne Monkton.
Fire fighters were called to release the two occupants of the car who were taken to the Great Western Hospital at Swindon with injuries police said they believed were not life threatening.
Police officers are still looking into the cause of the crash which partly blocked the road leading to large traffic tailbacks towards Devizes and Swindon.
There were further delays while the Smiths of Axford coal lorry with 20 bags of coal on the back was removed.
The injured couple are believed to come from the Malmesbury area. |

| This is a very sobering topic Pete. There is a big debate going on in Swindon at the moment about speed cameras. In today's local paper the mother of seven year old Tyrese Hannah - who was killed walking along the pavement on Drove Road with his mother and pet dog, who was also killed - thinks there should be more speed cameras, not less. She says "Speeding does kill - it can happen. People think twice about speeding if they know the cameras are around".
The 19 year old man who was arrested in connection with this has not yet been charged. It hasn't yet been determined whether he was speeding or just lost control of the car. |

Something or someone needs to apply themselves to our local roads. I was overtaken on Friday, going up Overton Hill (A4 West) below the Ridgeway, WHILE I WAS MYSELF OVERTAKING! Madness. |

| thats Mental! There are often shunts on the kennet avenue. I always drive slowly in a big car to stop overtaking. I get hooted at but I don't care.
I might take to sitting in laybys around Avebury with a hairdrier pointing out the windows at lunchtimes...

| I have a friend in Winterbourne who had a cardboard cut out of a policeman which he put in the hedge a few years ago. This slowed the traffic but the council made him take it down. PeteG |
