I admit i have certain pagan beliefs but that is going way too far. I dont evben know if paganism allows for a immaculate conception let alone a 'conventional' conception between a stone and a tree.
Which stone would you guess is the father. ?
I can see the nutcases now, a stone and a tree making a child, i shudder at what may happen if the american nutters get wind of this. clown

Going back to what this thread is supposed to be about (!)

I've been reading up on this question of whether bits of the Avenue are aligned to anything in the sky.
John North, in Stonehenge - Neolithic Man and the Cosmos 1996 comes close to it. He starts by failing to find star alignments, then looks at the moon. The diagram below is from that book. Note though, that the direction of the northernmost part of the avenue (stone pairs 7 to 15) almost points in the same direction as southern minor standstill - but not exactly!

North has drawn diagonal lines between stones at either side of the avenue, looking for more alignments. I believe there is current work going on now, looking for alignments. Interesting stuff.

Steve , are the ,all important ,declinations taken into consideration ? I don't buy the alignments across the avenue , it's a bit like stones across a stone circle you are sure to hit on to something and there are nearly 37 possible hits to choose from .

George, I'm really interestested in this stuff but don't know how to do it.
When you calculated your standstill position, did you do it for a particular date in history?

You'd be surprised how little difference the date makes . I used 3000 BC . Here some figures for the winter minor standstill rise at Avebury .
These are bearings not declination . 3000 BC =121.1 ,2500 bc =121.02 , 2000 BC 10.93 , 2000 ad =120.07 .
not a lot in it (innit) . The important factors are the relative heights of the horizon and viewing spot , latitude , distance apart as well as the bearing .

I have re-checked everything ,tightened up the figures ,excluded the 11-27 as the horizon is unsighted and still both major and minor standstills are working with the Bitham Barrow (fwiw I can't come across anything that suggests it is not Neolithic ) in the cross hairs , this is in itself is unimportant it's the avenue aligned on the horizon that matters although the barrow may well have been aligned to as is the case in many cursus /avenue alignments tha tpoint to burail s or it was buit with the avenue oriented to it or of course neither .What is very surprising is the change in angle at the dog leg is within a degree of the same change at the Stonehenge avenue 134 degrees , I doubt if that has been previously noted .

George - this is all very interesting but I don't really understand quite what you've done yet! I've only seen little snippets so far. Are you going to put all this up on a website, in detail?

Pete Admin has put links to some of my stuff on this site and it brings a lot of web traffic - it's great, because people do get to see it.

Never mind Megadread, guess that's you baby-sitting too.

By the way, today's Independent has the 50 best camping esentials in the Information magazine. I had a quick look and there is loads of innovative stuff very reasonably priced. I particularly liked the Selk Bag which is a 'cross between a cat suit and a puffa jacket, and you don't have to leave your bed to walk to the loo' - I couldn't see any stragetic zips though.
