Public consultation on Stonehenge By Gazette Reporter
A three-month public consultation on the future of Stonehenge will begin in the middle of July, seeking feedback on two important initiatives relating to the World Heritage Site.
In December 2007 the Culture Minister, Margaret Hodge, asked English Heritage to lead a review of the Stonehenge World Heritage Site Management Plan, taking account of the cancellation of the A303 road improvement scheme. She also asked English Heritage to work with partners to identify environmental improvements, including new visitor facilities, that could be made at Stonehenge by 2012, within the framework of this revised Management Plan. The Management Plan will provide the policy context within which decisions will be taken on the proposed environmental improvements.
The public will have a chance to learn more about the revisions to the Management Plan and the environmental improvements including proposals for the roads near Stonehenge and options for the location of new visitor facilities at various exhibitions:

| I think this time the Olympics will win out and NT/EH will be forced to do something. I have the feeling they will get it horribly wrong... PeteG |

| | It might be useful to keep a close eye on this. I understand the Government changed (without much public mention) the Avebury Management Plan as few years back as part of its preparation for developments at Stonehenge (the WHS being both sites). The issue was the monument vs. the monument within its historic landscape. My understanding is the Government wanted to diminish its responsibility to preserve and maintain other than the scheduled monument itself. Is there any truth in this? |

No, but I remember seeing a drawing, if I remember right it was very modern, turf covered maybe and lots of glass, not forgetting the little train to carry people to Stonehenge from the visitor centre. |
